Ten tips to really unwind.

It can be quite a challenge to unwind sometimes. With all the emails, apps, meetings and demanding colleagues, stress is hard to avoid. Not to mention the challenges in your personal life. To master all those stimuli, rest is essential. These 10 de-stressing tips will really calm your mind.

1. Relax in nature

Where is the best place to go to unwind? It does not have to be a luxury spa or weeks’ long holiday. A trip into nature is an ideal way to de-stress. Research from Wageningen University has shown that a natural environment lowers stress. Moreover, walking regularly helps you sleep better.

2. Pay attention to your breathing

Breathe. It happens all by itself of course. But take a conscious approach to it, it can be a useful way to unwind. A well-known breathing technique is called '4-7-8'. This involves inhaling for four seconds, holding that breath for seven seconds and then exhaling for eight seconds. Repeat this three or four times, and you will notice you have less tension in your body.

3. From 'must' to 'may’

We must do all sorts of things. We must work, exercise and cook. But what would happen if you replaced the word 'must' with 'may'? You may play sports because you enjoy the time for yourself. You may work because you are happy with your job.

However, if your work feels like a tedious obligation, maybe it's time for something new. At Maandag®, we will find the perfect job for you, no matter how much experience you have. Work that doesn't feel like an obligation, but that you enjoy doing!

4. Reducing stimulation in your spare time

Try not to fill up your free time completely. A full schedule can be stressful. Besides, spontaneous plans are often the most fun. An empty agenda gives you the freedom to decide what you feel like doing in the moment. This is how you really unwind in your free time.

5. Turn off your devices

Your phone, tablet, laptop and TV are entertaining, but they can also be over-stimulating. And sometimes you simply need to unwind. This is also an excellent way to unwind before sleeping.

6. Exercise helps against stress

Exercise relaxes you, whether you play sport, walk or go for a bike ride. Afterwards, your body is tired and your head calm. Need to clean the house? That too falls under exercise. With a bonus: a tidy house equals a tidy mind.

7. Chart your own course

Don't live your life according to other people's expectations. That takes tons of energy, creates stress and is unrealistic. Do what makes you happy. That way, you start your day with energy and end it fulfilled.

8. Share your thoughts and feelings

If you don't express something, it can get bigger and bigger in your head. But when you finally end up doing it, it often turns out not to be as bad as you thought. Share your thoughts and feelings with someone you trust. They can help you put things in perspective.

9. Dare to miss things

A weekend full of dinners, drinks and birthday parties can be incredibly enjoyable. Yet, it is important to take time for yourself. If you don't actually feel like going, just dare to say 'no' for once. Use that time to unwind. Next time, you will join in again, full of energy.

10. Seek out silence

Are you unable to unwind properly? There’s a good chance you haven't had a moment of silence today. That’s a shame because silence is actually highly beneficial. It allows you to organise your thoughts and let tensions slip away.

In short: be kind to yourself, listen to your feelings and maintain your boundaries. That will help you relax and experience less stress in the future.
