To stay active at work, it is best to take a break from time to time. First, by tackling energy drainers, such as a rushed start to the day or an awkward work schedule. But also look at what actually gives you energy. What inspires you at work and in your free time? These six tips will keep you full of fresh energy at work. Thanks to one of our partners at the Maandag® Academy: Chris Potter from Beaufort training agency.
Tip 1: Self-knowledge
Do you know what energises you? The first step towards more energy at work is understanding your own energy management. At work, make a list of your tasks and behind each one, state whether they give or drain energy. Once you have an idea of your energy sources and sponges, adjust your daily schedule accordingly. Ensure for variety: alternate stimulating tasks with jobs you enjoy less. By adopting such a dynamic rhythm, you won't nod off, and your energy will be maintained throughout the day.
Tip 2: Others’ expectations
The problem is not that others expect things from you, the problem only starts when you try to live up to them. If you try to meet those expectations at all costs, even if it means crossing your own boundaries, you guessed it: that costs you tons of energy.
So, think about the direction you want to go in, and the steps involved. You can temporarily deviate from your mapped-out route of course, but just don’t lose your way. It is important that the big picture leads to your vision of the future. Sail your own course, only then will you get where you want to be.
Tip 3: Be selective about who you surround yourself with
Your family, your partner and your best friends: who are the people around you? How do they stand in life? It is good to ask yourself these questions, because their role in your life affects your development and success. Do they have a negative outlook on life and always find fault with you? If that is the case, they are probably not helping you progress. But if they are inspiring and give you constructive feedback, they are on your side. Therefore, surround yourself with people who encourage you from the sidelines, people who leave you feeling lively and full of confidence.
Tip 4: The golden hour
The golden hour: that magical time just after sunrise, when the world has a golden glow. That peace and quiet are ideal for a morning ritual. Therefore, take advantage of that moment by doing something that sets a positive tone for the rest of the day. Instead of scrolling on your phone, read an inspiring book. Or work on a project of your own that brings you satisfaction: a paper, a drawing or that one brilliant idea you've been walking around with for a while. Once you are at work, do the really important things at the start of your day. Start with the most difficult task that you might be dreading. All done? Then your day can't go wrong.
Tip 5: Move!
We know by now that sitting is the new smoking. But did you know that regular exercise is not only good for your body, but also stimulates your creativity? That's because it activates your right hemisphere. That part of your brain is responsible for coming up with creative solutions, for instance. If you work at a desk, get up from your chair at least every hour to walk around, get some coffee or stretch. Get that heart rate up! Your energy level will increase with it.
Tip 6: Try something new
Cycle a different route to work, cook something you've never eaten before or chat with a stranger. Cold feet? It can be daunting to try something new, but it is well worth the investment. The mental challenge of a new activity keeps you creative. And it may just give you new ideas. So read that inspiring book, do that fun training course ortake the plunge and learn something completely new.
In practice
The tips work best if you set time aside for them. So put them in your calendar. We are happy to inspire you with an example of what that could look like:
Monday. Write down what gives you energy. And plan those particular activities more often in a day.
Tuesday. Are you struggling to set your boundaries? Give yourself a reminder. Stick a Post-it saying 'No is OK' on your screen, on your car’s dashboard or in your calendar.
Wednesday. Ask a close friend for advice. What would they recommend as a next step in your career?
Thursday. Set your alarm an hour earlier. Work on an art project in peace, do a guided meditation or read a chapter in your latest self-help book.
Friday. Hold a walking meeting. If you have a consultation planned, see if you can do it outside.
Weekend. Challenge yourself. Take a goat yoga workshop, make your own sushi or chat with at least four strangers.
